1961 Drive
Fayetteville, Arkansas
We lovingly executed a full remodel of a 1960s midcentury bungalow, bringing the house back to life by stripping it down to a modern version of its earlier self. Influenced by the homeowner's unassuming chic and spilling-over vintage wardrobe, our design story reimagined the home as a late 60s hideaway for a French New Wave film icon decamping from Paris to Mulholland Drive.

A CINEMATIC GLOW UP
After her home landed on the National Register of Historic Places, homeowner Anna E. Cottrell, a late 30s creative director and style entrepreneur, was finally ready to restore her mid-century bungalow after owning it for nearly a decade. The house, built in 1961 and nestled into a steep, wooded hillside with front and side façade of floor to ceiling windows, had foundational issues and was sinking into the earth. Storage was lacking, the original polished concrete floors were scratched and peeling, and many original details, like the wood paneled walls, were hidden behind layers of white paint. Cottrell saw the value in preserving the home and its history, and fixing these issues was the perfect opportunity to put her own spin on the house while preserving the original character that made her fall in love with the home.
A FEMININE JEWEL BOX
We layered each space with warm, feminine details to give each room a cinematic quality. We dreamed up the kitchen as a feminine jewel box, opting for an unlacquered brass and honed quartzite backsplash, a brass sink, brass bistro shelving, and nude-tone cabinetry and custom millwork by Daniel Smiley Carpentry.
BATHING IN THE GLOW
Our goal was to create a space that feels both found—as if the details added could have been there all along—and unique and personal to Anna's aesthetic. Bedside pendants act as dangling earrings. Vintage lighting by Helena Tynell in the bathrooms and office that doubles as Anna’s dressing room gives a warm glow to the nude limewash and plaster walls. We stripped the white paint from the wood paneled walls to expose the natural wood, and restored the original scored concrete flooring to a matte shade of charcoal. Bold quartzite with blush pink and blue hues adorn the primary vanity, custom dining room sideboard and kitchen. An unlacquered brass backsplash and oxblood zellige tile in the kitchen and guest bath amp up the drama, and a sprinkling of rose tile in the primary bath is a nostalgic nod to the home’s original pastel pink tile.
COZY AND INVITING
Brass globe pendant lights act as dangling earrings floating atop an Arabescato marble side table beside the bed topped with custom lumbar pillows in a Schumacher fabric and a New Zealand sheep skin. Creamy beige limewash creates warmth and texture on the walls that act as a backdrop for the dreamy large-scale photograph by Jin-Woo Prensena. In the office, custom linen drapery conceals closet space and softens this office that doubles as a dressing room. A vintage glass waterfall desk and vintage arm chair upholstered in a Manuel Canovas fabric float atop an antique Persian rug.
